Home Gym Exercise Equipment…

So you’ve made the smart decision to start taking better care of yourself, or have gotten fed up with your gym, simply can’t afford a membership, or don’t want a long-term contract. For whatever reason, you want to start working out at home. You’ll need some home gym exercise equipment. You have a lot of options, and what you get will depend a lot on your budget, your goals, and the space you have available.

If you have the means and the space, you can look into a home gym or multi gym, like the Bowflex or one of the sets from Body Solid. These can be a good choice if you want a one-stop-shop gym with a traditional, familiar feel to it. These particular machines aren’t my cup of tea personally, but I simply can’t argue with results. Thousands of folks have these types of machines and are very happy with them.

If your primary goal is fat loss, you may be interested in an exercise bike, elliptical machine, or stair stepper. Again, these types of machines have been used for many years with positive results. You should still have some resistance training in your program, but this type of home exercise equipment can add a degree of comfort and convenience to your cardio work.

On to something more up my alley; the classic weight set or dumbbells, along with a bench. In my opinion very few things are as effective for building strength than a classic free weight set.

Another great piece of home gym exercise equipment is a chin/dip leg raise found on this page. These are three excellent exercises that can be difficult to do at home, but these types of equipment make it possible - and convenient.

If you’re after minimal home gym exercise equipment, and like the simplistic approach, I’ll absolutely recommend kettlebells. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ve gotten better results and more bang for the buck from kettlebells than anything else I’ve tried. I highly recommend them if you’re up to the task.

Now, I understand that everyone has their own needs and goals. While I tend to lean toward kettlebells and free weights, I understand that not everyone can, or will, use them, or even like them. I can explain why they’re “better” than a stair stepper or a Bowflex. However, if you don’t like kettlebells or free weights, or have a specific physical condition that prevents you from using them, then you’ll get better results with the stair stepper or Bowflex.

The point is, take your time and be honest with yourself. Assess your goals and do your reading to find out what you need to do in order to meet those goals. When choosing equipment for your home gym, I’d say the most important consideration is whether you’ll actually use it, and continue to use it. You’re more likely to stick with the program and reach your goals if you get equipment you enjoy using.
